Igbo people are located southeastern part of Nigeria. One of Africa's most fascinating ethnic groups. This Igbo mask was collected by Bob Bisseling, a Dutch collector (1901-1976), he started collecting in the 1930's and was responsible for the school museum in Den Haag, and specialist in archaeology. This mask is in soft wood, very light, perfect to dance. Height= 21 cm and on it's stand 29.5 cm. There are some damages due to use below the chin of the mask Wood and remains of kaolin powder. Probable age is end XIXth to early XXth century. The Igbo (pronounced Ee-boh) of southeast Nigeria hold numerous masked performances each year to honor ancestors, insure crops, and entertain festivals. Maskers, referred as Mmanwu, also perform special rituals at ceremonies and rites of passage. Prior to the early 1900s, Mmanwu played important judicial and policing roles in Igbo society and when harvest celebrations take place.
