Congo Mid-20th century - good condition A Luba Hemba Janus staff two headed , Democratic Republic of Congo. One side one male, one female. Height: 25 cm without stand, 31 cm with the stand. These double heads are also called 'Kabeja', always represent a man and a woman, back to back. They represent the ‘ancestor’ couple of the Hemba people and are preserved in the houses of the clan and village chiefs. They have a protective function for the members of the clan and their rituals. The present ‘Kabeja ’ is made of a head of hard wood dyed black on top of a woven raffia structure, and a raffia ball on top.'.
