Provenance: - Bob Germ - Hoboken, Belgium These pieces of (African art) 'Snake' currency are forged of an iron spike splitting into 'branches', each of which resembles a snake. They can be found among the Mumuye and Lobi tribes. Used for the finalization of transactions between individuals or tribes, to buy animals, consumer goods or use as dowry for a marriage. These currencies can be found around the Benue river and the Cameroon border. Due to the remote nature of their location, the Lobi and Mumuye remained in near total isolation until 1959, when they were definitively conquered by the English. For a long time, it was believed that, in C. Kjersmeier's words, "northern Nigeria was inhabited by almost unknown tribes who had produced nothing that might be described as art."
